It can't hurt if you plan to keep your phone for years because things just seem to take more and more storage as time goes on. I have never purchased anything other than the base model storage. I'm currently using 41GB of 64GB of my phone storage and 16GB of 200GB of my cloud storage. That's after 4 years of use.

Personally I went for a 128gb white Xr from 32gb 6S Plus.
For me, 128 GB would be recklessly carefree, 64 GB is still half-free. Music is streamed, and I recently cleaned out my Photos library, which was around 2.5 GB on the iPhone anyway, as it was 'optimised'. If music was not streamed, I would have used about 5-10 GB more. Still would fall short of reaching the tipping point.
