When I chose hiking activity, distance works, but I guess it counts my steps. By the way, when cycling, speed seems to be working, and GPS shows ready.

I had the same problems, hugely varied altimeter readings (+-30,000ft / 10,000m) in the space of an hour sat in front of the tv. Went through support and updated the software by connecting to my pc which improves matters slightly but just took longer (maybe a day) to drift the same sort of amount.
